Bacteria belonging to the Collinsella genus help your pet by detoxifying poisons and protecting against pathogens. They are particularly sensitive to the antibiotic metronidazole (often called Flagyl), and may have difficulty returning even after the antibiotic sequence ends. While Collinsella is helpful in moderate amounts, an overgrowth can be problematic: elevated levels of Collinsella have been associated with diarrhea and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Increasing fiber consumption may help to keep Collinsella levels in check.
