Bacteria belonging to the Lachnospiraceae family have anti-inflammatory properties, and also help kill pathogens in the digestive tract. Higher levels of Lachnospiraceae have been associated with a decreased risk of some types of cancer. This group of bacteria is especially vulnerable to antibiotics, so it may be absent if your pet has recently undergone antibiotic treatment.
To increase Lachnospiraceae levels, try adding a source of dietary fiber like psyllium husk powder to your pet’s diet. Plant-based complex carbohydrates like psyllium support the growth of these bacteria.
