Bacteria belonging to the Bifidobacterium genus can help reduce the severity of diarrhea, and can also help relieve symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Bifidobacteria also help regulate the ratio of anti-inflammatory to pro-inflammatory proteins in the body, to keep the immune system working at a healthy level. These bacteria are often found in probiotic supplements, and are beneficial at low levels, but when they start to take up too much space in the microbiome, it can start to cause health problems. If your pet has a Bifidobacterium level above 10% and is currently taking a probiotic supplement, consider eliminating it or giving it at a lower dose, to be sure there is room for all the necessary bacteria in the microbiome.
